SRO Shortage in Hamilton County Schools

Hamilton County SRO Officers 2015-

Hamilton County has been facing a School Resource Officer or SRO shortage because of the county’s transition to online learning earlier this school year. When Hamilton County schools went virtual a lot of SROs were assigned to perimeter duty at the short staffed, Silverdale Detention Center.

When Hamilton County schools returned to in person learning this week, only three of the 35 officers were able to return to their schools. Even before the pandemic and implementation of online learning, the county has been short on SROs. The county has 79 schools with only 35 SROs. The safety of Hamilton County students is a priority for Sheriff Jim Hammond who is hoping to eventually put a SRO in every school.
