After being found on December 26th, Joe the pigeon was planned to be killed for being a biosecurity threat. A tag on Joe’s leg indicated that the bird was from America. Since he was not native to Australia, meaning he could be a threat to Australia’s food security and wild bird populations.

The tag on Joe’s leg was registered to an Alabama resident and suggested the pigeon was a racing bird who was last seen in Oregon in October. When the American  Racing Pigeon Union denied that the leg tag was genuine, it meant Joe’s life would be spared.
